((Btw, guys, my account move's been delayed a bit. Derp! Also, this journal is REALLY long.
))
So guys, are any of you fans of ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com (Which hosts internet review shows including the Nostalgia Critic, Atop the Fourth Wall, and the Nostalgia Chick). If so, what are your thoughts on the recent drama including Noah Antwiler, AKA the Spoony One?
For those of you who don't know, Noah, who goes by Spoony, reviews video games, movies, TV shows, and professional wrestling; and up until recently he was one of the 'Big Three' on TGWTG.com (The other two being Nostalgia Critic, played by Doug Walker, and Linkara, played by Lewis Lovhaug). However, on June 21st TGWTG.com issued a farewell to Spoony, revealing that he has left (or, it is speculated, was fired) the website. Now it's worth noting he isn't the first to leave the site; Matt Burkett, who played Apollo Z. Hack, left the site in May 2011 due to him and his girlfriend, another reviewer on the site, breaking up and not wanting it to be awkward. Also, it's worth noting that Daniel Rizzo, who played ThatAussieGuy, was in fact fired from TGWTG.com due to (quote by TGWTG team) "some issues, ill advised actions, and other various events". Lindsay Ellis, who plays the Nostalgia Chick, explained on her blog he was spreading rumors about some reviewers, including that she was sleeping around with the site contributors.
However, Spoony was easily one of the most popular reviewers on the site, rivaled only by the Nostalgia Critic, and the events leading up to his departure were VERY public, heavily taking place on Twitter. It should be said that Spoony has had a rough year due to stress, serious health problems (he has a heart condition), and being diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. He made a joke to, JesuOtaku, a female contributor, read here:
twitter.com/TheSpoonyOne/statu…, a LOT of drama has culminated specifically around this comment, but here's my take on it. Rape jokes (if you consider it that, not everyone seems to) are nothing new to Spoony, or anybody on TGWTG. They've been made by Nostalgia Critic, Nostalgia Chick, and many others. Heck, suicide jokes and parental abuse jokes happen as well; so while the joke itself is off-color and the tone's a bit odd for Spoony, the joke itself isn't that odd. His reaction, however, is.
He, obviously, got backlash for the comment. To which, as a fan, I have to admit; he a giant f'ing mental breakdown. On Twitter. I'm not gonna link it, because it went on for a while, but things got crazy. Noah started lashing out at fans, TGWTG contributors (who, by the way, many of which he is close friends with), and anything within range. Many of the people he lashed out at were concerned for his mental health. He had a particularly bad fight with Obscurus Lupa, another female contributor. She stated the joke was offensive, and I can agree with her point. (Read more at her blog post:
obscuruslupa.tumblr.com/post/2… ) The fighting, the joke, and his twitter meltdown culminated in Spoony getting a 4-week suspension from the site.
Now, all the drama is said and done; both Spoony and Lupa have worked things out, and there seems to be no animosity between Spoony and the site's contributors (Doug Walker mentioned that he was happy to catch up with Noah at a convention they both attended), Spoony has said he's happy to be in the soon-to-be released 4th anniversary of TGWTG movie (they make one annually), and his videos are now on his own website, The Spoony Experiment. But alas, the Internet (myself included) speculates on. So what do you think? Did Spoony bring this upon himself? Was it an overreaction on Lupa and TGWTG.com's part? Do you think he and TGWTG will ever partner again?
